Amanti Earrings
If you watch the second season of The White Lotus you may have noticed an unusual sculpture popping up in some of the show's stunning scenes of Sicily. They are known as the Teste di Moro & are powerful symbols of the island and its multicultural past.
A two-faced motif, one masculine with a sweeping moustache and turban and one feminine adorn ceramic planters around the island, often brightly painted and adorned with fruits and flowers. The Teste di Moro are a traditional symbol of luck found throughout Sicily. Their origin is a folk tale from the time of the Arab occupation of Sicily more than a thousand years ago.
The two faces represent a pair of doomed lovers, a North African man and a Sicilian girl who fall in love on the island. The legend goes that in Palermo a young Sicilian girl was out on her balcony when she met a handsome prince visiting from northern Africa. It was love at first sight, but the joy was cut short when she learned that he would soon leave Sicily and return to his country where he already had a wife and children. In a fit of jealous rage she cut of his head whilst he slept, and kept it as a pot for her basil which flourished and was the envy of the neighborhood. The neighbors begin to make their own ceramic versions of the head and the tradition was born
